1. ABOUT THIS PAGE
1.1 Second Innings is for adults who want meaningful relationships, many of whom are returning to dating after divorce, separation, or the loss of a partner, or after a long time single. Dating has changed, and so have the risks. This page gives practical safety tips and the dating safety disclosures that the laws of New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Texas, and other places require.
1.2 This page is incorporated into our Terms of Service and forms part of the "Agreement" described in Section 1.3 of the Terms. It is information only and is not a complete list of every precaution you should take. Following these tips does not guarantee your safety. YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER MEMBERS, ONLINE AND OFFLINE, AND YOU ASSUME THE RISKS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 7 OF THE TERMS.
2. DATING SAFETY DISCLOSURES
2.1 Criminal background screening
SECOND INNINGS DOES NOT CONDUCT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND SCREENINGS OF ITS MEMBERS.
Our Terms require every member to promise that they have not been convicted of a felony, a sex crime, or a crime involving violence, stalking, harassment, fraud, or exploitation, and that they are not required to register as a sex offender (Terms Sections 2.1(e) and 2.1(f)). WE DO NOT VERIFY THESE PROMISES. MEMBERS WITH CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS MAY BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE SERVICES AND COMMUNICATE WITH YOU, EVEN THOUGH OUR TERMS PROHIBIT THEM FROM DOING SO.
2.2 Our policy on members with criminal convictions
Members who have been convicted of the crimes described in Section 2.1 of the Terms, or who are required to register as sex offenders, are not permitted to use the Services. If we learn that a member has such a conviction or registration, we may take steps to block or remove that member, and we reserve the right to block or remove members for other reasons, including other convictions, arrests, or charges, as described in Sections 6 and 21 of the Terms. Because we do not conduct criminal background screenings, we generally learn of a conviction only if it is reported to us.
2.3 About criminal background screenings
We reserve the right, but have no obligation, to conduct screenings in the future (Terms Section 6.2). If we do, or if you choose to search the public records of someone you meet, keep in mind that:
- criminal background screenings are not foolproof;
- they may give members a false sense of security;
- they are not a perfect safety solution;
- criminals may circumvent even the most sophisticated search technology;
- not all criminal records are public in all states, and not all databases are up to date;
- only publicly available convictions are included in a screening; and
- screenings do not cover other types of convictions or arrests, or any convictions from foreign countries.
If we begin conducting criminal background screenings, we will update this page, including how screenings are conducted, how often information is updated, and which convictions disqualify a member, and will notify members as required by law.
2.4 Verification badges
A "PHOTO VERIFIED" OR SIMILAR BADGE MEANS ONLY THAT THE MEMBER COMPLETED AN AUTOMATED PHOTO AND LIVENESS CHECK AT A POINT IN TIME AND THAT OUR SYSTEMS DID NOT DETECT A MISMATCH. It does not confirm a member's legal identity, name, age, marital or relationship status, background, health, intentions, or truthfulness, and it does not mean the member is safe. Verification tools can be wrong or circumvented (Terms Section 6.3).
2.5 Safety awareness notification
Please read and follow these safer dating practices:
- Anyone who is able to commit identity theft can also falsify a dating profile.
- There is no substitute for acting with caution when communicating with any stranger who wants to meet you.
- Never include your last name, email address, home address, phone number, place of work, or any other identifying information in your profile or initial messages. Stop communicating with anyone who pressures you for personal or financial information or attempts in any way to trick you into revealing it.
- If you choose to have a face-to-face meeting with another member, always tell someone in your family or a friend where you are going and when you will return. Never agree to be picked up at your home. Always provide your own transportation to and from your date, and meet in a public place with many people around.
- Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or financial information to anyone you meet through the Services, no matter the reason.
- Be wary of anyone who asks you to move the conversation off the Services quickly, refuses to video chat or meet, or tells stories designed to make you feel sorry for them or rush you.
- Report anyone who behaves suspiciously, harasses you, or asks for money, using the in-app report tool or support@secondinnings.app.
2.6 State-specific notices
- New Jersey. The disclosures in Sections 2.1 to 2.5 are provided to New Jersey members under the New Jersey Internet Dating Safety Act, N.J.S.A. 56:8-168 et seq., including the criminal background screening disclosure and the safety awareness notification required by N.J.S.A. 56:8-171.
- New York. The safety awareness notification in Section 2.5 is provided to New York members under New York General Business Law Section 394-cc.
- Illinois. The disclosures in Sections 2.1 to 2.5 are provided to Illinois members under the Illinois Internet Dating Safety Act, 815 ILCS 518.
- Texas. The disclosures in Sections 2.1 to 2.5 are provided to Texas members under Chapter 106 of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, including the disclosure that we do not conduct criminal background checks and the safety awareness notification.
- Other places. These disclosures are provided to all members wherever they live.
3. STAYING SAFE ONLINE
3.1 Protect your personal information. Other members see your first name and the initial of your last name, your age (not your birth date), and an approximate distance (not your exact location). Keep it that way until you trust someone. Avoid sharing your full name, home or work address, your children's names or schools, your daily routine, or financial details. Be careful about photos that show your house number, car plate, workplace, or children's school.
3.2 Keep conversations on the Services at first. Our safety and reporting tools work only on the Services. Scammers often push to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, text messages, or email quickly. You can take your time.
3.3 Protect your account. Second Innings will never ask you for your password or one-time code outside the login screen (Terms Section 3.3). Never share a one-time code with anyone, including someone claiming to be from Second Innings or a member who says they "sent you a code by mistake." Use a strong passcode on your phone.
3.4 Video chat before you meet. A short video call on a platform you trust helps confirm that a person looks like their photos. Be suspicious of repeated excuses for why someone cannot video chat.
3.5 Do your own research. Search a person's name and run a reverse image search of their photos. Check that their story is consistent. Remember that online information can be wrong or fake.
3.6 Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is. You can unmatch, block, or report anyone at any time, and you do not owe anyone an explanation.
3.7 Control what your notifications show. Message notifications can appear on your lock screen. You can choose whether notifications show message previews in the app's notification settings.
4. MONEY AND SCAMS
4.1 The golden rule. NEVER SEND MONEY, GIFT CARDS, CRYPTOCURRENCY, BANK OR CARD DETAILS, OR ANY OTHER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO SOMEONE YOU MEET THROUGH THE SERVICES, NO MATTER HOW CONVINCING THE STORY. Requesting or offering money is prohibited on Second Innings (Terms Section 5.1(g)).
4.2 Romance scams. Romance scammers build an emotional connection, sometimes over weeks or months, and then ask for money. Common signs include:
- declaring strong feelings very quickly;
- claiming to work overseas, on an oil rig or ship, in the military, or as a doctor with an international organization;
- always having a reason they cannot meet or video chat;
- a sudden emergency, such as a medical bill, legal problem, customs fee, travel cost, or frozen bank account;
- asking you to receive or forward money or packages for them; and
- asking you to keep the relationship secret.
4.3 Investment and cryptocurrency scams ("pig butchering"). Some scammers never ask for money directly. Instead they talk about their success with cryptocurrency, foreign exchange, or other trading, and offer to "teach" you. They may direct you to a website or app that shows large fake profits, let you withdraw a small amount to build trust, and then demand "taxes" or "fees" before you can withdraw more. Anyone on a dating service who brings up an investment opportunity is a serious red flag. Promoting investments is prohibited on Second Innings (Terms Section 5.1(g)).
4.4 Recovery scams. If you have lost money, be wary of anyone who contacts you offering to recover it for a fee, including people claiming to be from law enforcement, a government agency, a law firm, or Second Innings.
4.5 Other scams. Watch for requests to buy gift cards, pay for a "verification" or "safety" service, click unfamiliar links, download apps, or share codes sent to your phone.
4.6 If you think you have been scammed. Stop all contact, do not send more money, contact your bank or payment provider immediately, keep records of messages and transactions, report the member to us, and report the scam to the authorities (Section 9.3).
5. SEXTORTION AND INTIMATE IMAGES
5.1 Think before you share. Once you send an intimate image or video, you cannot control what happens to it. Be cautious about sharing intimate content or appearing on camera in an intimate way, especially with someone you have not met in person. Sending unsolicited sexual content is prohibited on Second Innings (Terms Section 5.1(e)).
5.2 What sextortion looks like. Sextortion is when someone threatens to share intimate images or videos of you unless you pay money or send more content. Scammers may record video calls without your knowledge or use fake or AI-generated images.
5.3 If it happens to you. It is not your fault. DO NOT PAY AND DO NOT SEND MORE CONTENT. Paying rarely ends the threats. Stop responding, keep the messages and the person's profile details (screenshots, usernames, and payment requests), block and report them to us, and report the threat to the police. You can also use free tools to help stop the spread of intimate images (Section 9.3).
5.4 Images of minors. If anyone shares or requests sexual images of a person under 18, report it to us immediately and to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline (Section 9.3). See our Child Safety Standards at secondinnings.app/child-sexual-abuse-exploitation.
6. MEETING IN PERSON
6.1 Take your time. Do not feel pressured to meet before you are ready.
6.2 Meet in public and stay in public. Meet for the first few dates in a busy public place, such as a cafe or restaurant, not at your home, your date's home, or a secluded location.
6.3 Tell someone. Tell a friend or family member who you are meeting, where, and when you expect to be home. Consider sharing your live location with them during the date and arranging a check-in call.
6.4 Get yourself there and back. Arrange your own transportation and do not accept a ride home from someone you have just met. Keep your phone charged.
6.5 Stay in control. Know your limits with alcohol and other substances. Do not leave your drink or belongings unattended, and do not accept a drink you did not see being poured.
6.6 Leave if you feel uncomfortable. You can end a date at any time. Ask staff at the venue for help if you need it.
6.7 Children and family. Think carefully before introducing a new partner to your children, and do not share details about your children until you know someone well. Never leave your children in the care of someone you have only recently met.
6.8 Traveling. Be especially careful about traveling to meet someone. Book your own accommodation and tell someone your plans.
7. SEXUAL HEALTH
7.1 Protect yourself and your partners. Use protection, such as condoms, to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancy.
7.2 Talk with partners about sexual health and testing before you become intimate. Some STIs have no symptoms, and you cannot tell whether someone has an STI by looking at them. Regular testing is the only way to know your status. In the United States you can find testing locations at gettested.cdc.gov.
7.3 Consent is required for every sexual activity, every time, and can be withdrawn at any time. A person who is impaired by alcohol or drugs may not be able to consent.
7.4 Second Innings does not verify any member's health or sexual health status. Talk to a doctor or healthcare provider about your sexual health. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
8. REPORTING AND BLOCKING
8.1 Report. You can report a member using the in-app report tool, choosing a reason such as inappropriate behavior, fake profile, harassment, scam or fraud, or offensive content, and adding details. You can also email support@secondinnings.app. Please report anyone who asks for money, threatens you, harasses you, appears to be under 18, or behaves in a way that makes you feel unsafe, including after a date or after a match ends.
8.2 Block and unmatch. Blocking a member stops them from contacting you on the Services. You can also unmatch or disconnect from a member at any time.
8.3 Take a break. You can hide your profile or pause your account in the app settings at any time (Terms Section 21.2).
8.4 What happens next. We review reports in our discretion and may take action, such as warning, restricting, suspending, or removing an account. We may not tell you the outcome (Terms Section 6.5). Reporting a member to us is not a substitute for contacting the police.
8.5 Keep evidence. Before blocking, consider taking screenshots of the profile and messages in case you need them for a police report. Sharing them with us or with law enforcement to report a safety concern is permitted (Terms Section 5.1(l)).
